IB MYP Students Showcase Personal Projects at Kokomo High School

Approximately 90 10th-graders in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP) at KHS presented their Personal Projects to the Kokomo community during an annual showcase.

Kokomo High School is a partner school with Central Middle International School in offering the IB Middle Years Program for students in grades 6 through 10, with an aim of developing Internationally minded students.

The Personal Project is the culminating activity for students in year 5 of MYP. The IB students had an opportunity to explore topics they are passionate about, while developing products and/or projects that allowed the students to express themselves creatively. The Personal Project was a way for students to demonstrate what they learned in the MYP program, both in their subjects and in their approaches to learning.

As part of the Personal Project, students were required to select an idea, research that idea, and develop that project. While the IB students worked with a school IB supervisor, the bulk of the project was completed outside of school hours. Students recorded their activity in a process journal and wrote an essay concerning their research and product.

The 2019 projects included, Animal Anatomy Research, Science Kits for the Next Generation, Learning to Read Drum Music, Crocheting, Learning to Weld, Making an Old Car Run, The Benefits of Teaching Spanish, Music in Moods, 3D Character Modeling, How Exercise Affects the Brain, The Art of Animation, All About Astrology, and many more!

Kokomo High School sophomore Cole Scheiman chose to explore the ways that exercise affects the brain. As part of his presentation, Cole discussed the scientific ways that aerobic exercise influences the brain on both a molecular and behavioral level. Cole collected data from his peers for the project.

“I play soccer for both Kokomo High School and a club team, so I exercise frequently,” Cole explained. “I knew I wanted to relate my Personal Project to exercise, but I chose this specific topic because I was interested in the relationship between mental health and exercise.”

KHS sophomore Lydia Emry titled her Personal Project Altering the Nutrition Unit. Lydia explored nutrition education in high school health classes, and has worked to improve curriculum related to dietetics.

KHS sophomore Olivia Hicks chose to explore the ways in which athletics can improve a student’s life. Olivia developed a video using interviews she conducted with Kokomo High School students, including international students, who discussed how sports have benefited them.

Olivia values the lessons she has learned while studying in the IB program.

“My IB classes have taught me the importance of being open minded, and that when people of many cultures and backgrounds work together, amazing things happen,” Olivia explained.

Leslie Lewis, who teaches English in the Middle Years Program at KHS, enjoys watching students develop their Personal Projects.

“The experience benefits students by allowing them to explore a topic they are passionate about, while using the IB Learner Profiles they have honed during their five years in the Middle Years Program,” Ms. Lewis explained. “The Personal Projects offer students tangible evidence that the IB model works!”

KHS IB English teacher Michael Marvin enjoyed seeing his students showcase their personalities and talents during the annual event. Mr. Marvin enjoys teaching IB courses because the core philosophy of the IB program focuses on teaching students to become lifelong learners.

“I like that the impact extends beyond the classroom, and into my students’ real lives,” Mr. Marvin noted. “The IB curriculum requires an international component, so students are tasked with considering the world outside Kokomo… and how we all fit into the bigger picture.”

Ms. Lewis added that the Personal Projects, and the IB program in general, teach students to become more independent as learners.

“This program challenges both teachers and students to be internationally minded, while developing students who have the confidence to tackle rigorous course work,” Ms. Lewis explained.
